Epilepsy Education Day

This special event is for parents and caregivers of children recently diagnosed with epilepsy, hosted by the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Our experts will talk through common myths and misconceptions, seizure first aid and safety, seizure detection devices, living with and treating epilepsy, emotional health, and supports within your community.

Session 1 – Introduction to Epilepsy

At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the definition of seizures and epilepsy, the prevalence of epilepsy, and the different tests that help neurologists diagnose patients with epilepsy. This session will also discuss the many treatments that exist for patients with epilepsy.

Session 2 – Genetics

At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand how epilepsy can be genetic and the importance of genetic diagnosis. This session will also discuss who should consider genetic testing or genetic counseling.

Session 3 – Common Myths and Misconceptions

At the end of this session, learners will be able to recognize common myths and misconceptions about epilepsy.

Session 4 – Seizure First Aid and Safety

At the end of this session, learners will be able to recall basic seizure first aid to help in responding to seizures safely and appropriately.

Session 5 – Seizure Detection Devices

At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand seizure detection devices and how they work. This session will discuss specific seizure detection devices, such as implantable seizure response devices, seizure apps, and seizure dogs.

Session 6 – Living with and Treating Epilepsy: A Patient and Physician Perspective

At the end of this session, learners will be able to recognize both the patient and physician perspective of living with and treating epilepsy.

Session 7 – Emotional Health and Epilepsy

At the end of this session, learners will be able to recognize pediatric psychological concerns associated with epilepsy and understand the services of a mental health provider. This session will also explain what resources are available within CHOP and when to access them.

Session 8 – Explaining Epilepsy to Others

At the end of this session, learners will be able to identify who needs to know about your epilepsy diagnosis, discuss ways to inform family, friends, and the larger community about epilepsy, and understand who to ask for support in discussing your epilepsy diagnosis.

Session 9 – Supports Within Your Community

At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the role of medical social work and learn about emotional supports available to the entire family. This session will also discuss secondary insurance in the state of Pennsylvania and the difference between public and private school epilepsy accommodations.

Session 10 – Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA

At the end of this session, learners will understand what the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania is and the various programs, services, and resources they offer to people with epilepsy.
