Renal transplantation provides the best outcomes for qualified adult and pediatric patients with end stage renal disease. Many aspects of renal transplantation are similar in adult and pediatric patients, however the disease processes, the anatomic challenges and the management of pediatric patients differ in significant ways from their more common adult counterparts. This seminar will highlight some of the unique aspects of renal transplant surgery in the pediatric population, highlighting indications for pediatric transplant listing and listing strategy, anatomic considerations unique to pediatric renal transplantation, and specific considerations in donor selection that are most applicable to the pediatric population. Management strategies to maximize outcomes after renal transplantation will be discussed as well.
