My Own Medicine: Lessons Learned en Route to Remission

Geoffrey Kurland, MD is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology  at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine  and the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is Medical Director of the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program and the Pediatric Pulmonology Flexible Bronchoscopy Service.

Dr. Kurland earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College, majoring in Biology (cum laude) and completed medical school at the Stanford University, where he was in the inaugural class of the Medical Scientist Training Program (NIH). He completed a residency in Pediatrics and a 3-year Fellowship in Pediatric Allergy/Immunology/and Rheumatology followed by an additional year of Research Fellowship with clinical training in Adult Pulmonology at Stanford University. Prior to joining Pitt Pediatrics in 1988, Dr. Kurland was an Assistant Professor at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, where he was Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology.

Dr. Kurland is primarily a clinician and educator. He deals with children with chronic pulmonary conditions, including cystic fibrosis, asthma, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. He has a special interest in unusual pediatric pulmonary disorders including those leading to chronic diffuse lung disease. He directs the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program, and in this role serves as a consultant to other Pediatric Pulmonologists in the US and other countries. His special interest in diffuse lung disease includes expertise in areas such as post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans and other unusual lung diseases of childhood. As the former Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Director at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, he trained more than 20 Pediatric Pulmonologists. As director of the Bronchoscopy service, he has served as a member of the faculty for the R.E. Wood Pediatric Flexible Bronchoscopy Course since 1985. In this role he has participated in training over 2,000 pediatric sub-specialists from every continent in the technique of bronchoscopy.  He has published over 60 manuscripts as well as numerous book chapters. He has written a personal memoir of his own experience as a patient with leukemia, entitled “My Own Medicine: A Doctor’s Life as a Patient.” He has given several hundred lectures on a multitude of pulmonary and personal topics; and he has been Visiting Professor at several institutions, including Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and the Post-Graduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India.
